SECOND ROUND TABLE DONATION FOR KINGHORN LIFEBOAT
Kinghorn RNLI Lifeboat volunteers welcomed members of Dunfermline Round Table to the lifeboat station on Tuesday to present a cheque for £1000.
This magnificent donation was raised by members of the Dunfermline branch of Round Table as part of a nationwide effort to raise money for training of RNLI crew as part of Round Table’s Presidential Charity of the Year 2010-2011.
It costs an average of £1214 a year to train a lifeboat crewmember. Only one in ten crewmembers come from a maritime background, so it is critical that appropriate training is provided to equip crew to deal with the many situations they will be confronted with.
Ten members from Dunfermline Round Table visited the station where they met the crew, listened to an overview of the station and organisation and saw a short film, followed by a tour of the lifeboat station where they were able to see the Atlantic 85 lifeboat, Tommy Niven, which has been stationed at Kinghorn for 18 months.
Kinghorn Lifeboat Operations Manager, Paul Wibberley continued, “We are delighted that Round Table have chosen to support the RNLI as their charity of the year. It has been great to see the Dunfermline branch at the station where they have been able to learn about the RNLI lifeboat service and also present us with their cheque.”
“The RNLI as a charity receive no funding from the UK or Irish Governments; the service is funded entirely by voluntary donations, so it is essential that we receive support such as this donation from Round Table to allow us to continue to provide the lifeboat service. This requires training of all members of the RNLI to allow them to help provide this service.”
John Wallace, Chairman of Dunfermline Round Table, explained, “We are delighted to be able to visit the lifeboat station and hand over this cheque this evening. We have thoroughly enjoyed our informative visit, and are delighted that we can make this donation to allow you to continue with your excellent work.”
“The RNLI is the Round Table’s Presidential Charity of the year. National President, John Kilshaw, chose the RNLI because the lifesaving service:
· receives no UK Government funding
· is national and covers both Great Britain and Ireland
· affects each and every one of us, whether at sea, inshore or at the beach.
The volunteer crews of the RNLI risk their lives to assist others – rescuing on average 22 people every day.
The aim of the Presidential Charity appeal is to raise over £150,000 to offset the cost of training 100 volunteer crew members, one inshore lifeboat course, and one sea survival course.”
This is the second such donation from Round Table. Kinross-shire branch presented a cheque in November to the station during a visit to Kinghorn.
The next fundraising event for Kinghorn Lifeboat Station will be the Yellow Welly Tea, which will be held on Saturday 12th March in the Church Hall at 10am. There will be freshly made pancakes and coffee, and all the usual stalls.
